If you are starting from Mombasa road or Embakasi area, you can use the eastern by-pass accessed near the AP training college. I'm told it's great and it will take you all the way to Ruiru where you join Thika highway again.

If you are starting from CBD and going through Pangani, then take Kiambu Road all the way to Kiambu...just a few km before. When you see the sign post for KIST [on your left, about 10km from Muthaiga], drive a few hundred metres (down a hill) and take the right turn; go up another hill, over some bumps and you come to a roundabout; take a right turn at the roundabout.

Drive on for several km and you will come to a "T" junction. Take a left turn here (CARE!! Right will take you to Kamiti, and if they don't lock you up, you will find yourself at Kasarani!!!). Ruiru town will be a few km ahead and then join the Thika highway again.

Really? Hmmm....I know we had left Ahero quite a distance behind. I must be thinking of the left turning to Chemelil-Nandi Hills - is THAT at Awasi?

@ Djinn the turn is maybe less than 5km from Ahero and yes the left turn to Chemelil Nandi Hills is Ahero.

@Ms Mkenya - went to Muranga on the Easter weekend - actually abt 50km beyond it - Kangema-Githiga (this latter section used to be murram but it is now tarmac - almost up to Mrs Djinn's grandma's door smile

Thika road is very dangerous in some places - starting at Pangani going downwards, abt 5 lanes have to trickle into 2 lanes - it was Saturday around 10 am - and that short distance took us abt 30 mins owing to overlapping and such.

Diversions after GSU, Kasarani, Githurai - at Kahawa almost until Ruiru some 3-4 lane sections are open but unmarked so if you do not have "lane sense" then some collisions are likely - this increases drastically at night.

Where they have excavated "under passes" - this is especially dangerous at night when using the diversions - with all the dust and perhaps blinding headlights from the opposite direction, you cannot easily see the edge of the road and can drop into these sections - indeed on the way back from Muranga we found quite a bit of glass in one such area.

After Thika its the same old road - dual all the way to the Muranga turn off. Better leave early and return early.

This is a pretty good description of the problems on Thika Road but as Mukiha suggests you can avoid a big part of the headache by using the Kiambu - Kamiti - Ruiru Road.

I should just print this out. I do not know that route very well. That Kiambu one..

@Mukiha - question - is the northern bypass complete all the way to Sigona/wangige to ruiru ? or am i mistaken? i wanted to expertiment with that on the way back but since it was getting dark, figured to stay on thika rd. I ask because I'd want to end up near kabete afterwards...and maybe next time can go via that route,

I don't know; I have seen cars turning off at the junction where it crosses Kiambu Road....I have never been courageous enough to follow them blindly. But I suspect the link from Ruiru to Kiambu Rd fly-over is complete.

On 27 Apr, I used the portion between Kiambu road and Membley. Several portions are not complete especially overpasses. But the rest was a joy to drive on.
