I don't know what's happened to the kids today
We were different from the kids today
in every way
We didn't have none of this crazy music
We didn't have none of these crazy clothes
We didn't have guys getting high on the doorstop
We didn't have none of those no, no

I don't care for these long haired guys
They need a good bath
They got shifty eyes
They're either sleeping in the park
Begging in the street
Or they're speeding 'round town in a Lotus Elite
(were'd they get the money from anyway?)

I can't say that I fought for kids like you in the war
I fought for kids like the kids I thought you'd be
That's who I was fighting for
Put you all in the army, that's what I'd do
Short back and sides, make men of you

Willi's my boy, he's been good up till now
But last night he said "I'm gonna make it
on my own somehow
Going off with my friends on the road a while
Get away from you, you can drop dead, that's
what you can do!"

I would have thought that after fifty-five years
A body could expect some kind of respect
from the kids today
I don't know what's happened to the kids today
I don't know what's happened to the kids today

the words of this song are quite humbling when you think that they were written in 1970!

the last few weeks I have been listening to the collection of Labi Siffre's songs from the early seventies and this one kept ringing in my head....

To think that 40 years later we [the older folk] are still lamenting about "the kids today"...the same way our parents used to....

And I turned 45 few days ago....

Powerful words. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Kids today get away with murder. I figure every generation must be given its breathing space. Also figured I wont always “get it” when it comes to figuring out kids today.....clothes, language, priorities - name it

Belated H'Bday Mukiha! Clearly, the generational gap between parents and their kids will never be closed, because the world is constantly changing...
On a general note, we humans are interesting creatures - we think others older than us must be very old, until one day we wake up and realise that we have attained that same age that we used to think is very old!

Happy belated birthday Mukiha! Interesting thoughts. The other day we were debating this issue with some older men. After listning to old time music, my opinion is that nothing much has changed. Dirty lyrics were there even then. We often think that our upbringing and our times are the best. We always complain that life is becoming more expensive.
