What about calling him/her simply Boss. i.e., How is your boss doing? Otherwise, once you start being politically correct, literature loses flavor.

Very good @Surealligator, we seem to be getting a convergence of ideas. He could have simply said Boss, but chose not to because there was intent to disparage. But maybe he needed to qualify Boss because @Mukhamba is quite a job hopper that there is need to identify which Boss was being referred to.
