"Life in America is so demanding, says Mr Maina, that it has cost several of his African friends their marriages and even led some to commit suicide"

Has it come to this? I remember sometime back, my peers would do anything to get the visa. I guess home is always the best. We just need to put our political act together.

And yet every year, you'll get Kenyans selling their house, quitting decent jobs, yanking their kids out of school and dragging them a continent away all in the name of a "green card".

But what about the diff. that we see between kenyans who work abroad and those back home in terms of investments? For example,I once lived in Ruaka in some nice flat,we were told the owner is lady like in her late 30s working and living USA.Her friends/ people who she worked with can only plan put up something like that after 10 yrs of serious saving.......they still live in rental houses......would you still say that it is not worth trying?

Why the quick analysis that kenyans living abroad are all sad. Quoting one fellow who has not achieved his goals and thinking that the rest are like that is not fair.

Notice that his preoccupation was to go there and buy houses and drive flashy cars. Others went there to work or gain knowledge. They don't complain.

I know many who have succeeded out there and others who have failed. Both would have achieved the same results in Kenya just because of their attitudes.

@Famooz,
Life is what you make it.....If you can make a million dollars in NY,you can make the same in Nairobi....and don't look across the fence too often....where i come from ,they say ndiakaguo ta ya wakini(someone help interpret).......I thank God because i don't work to be rich, but to be happy...and i am happy indeed...smile .
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

@Njung'e, I really like this! I think I should enjoy the journey rather than focusing too much on the destination!

@ guka,i am not sure about your first sentence.
I give an example A nurse in Kenya earns about 100k ( more or less)and this is in private hospitals. Pay all those dues that people lipa nad she has take home of 70K ( again, this is on the higher side)

A nurse in the states earns per hour.last i checked,it was about 20dollars /hour. in one month a nurse will get about half a million. Mind you this nurse can decide to do 2 jobs. so factor in living expenses and whichever way you look at it,they are not the same.......

And then that small lecture of yours about working to be happy.....i can also launch a debate on it smile

McReggea, I would have loved that Tshirt.

The problem with most of us is that we want the easy way out. We want to go to USA because we shall buy a car. We want to go to Lolliondo because we shall be cured Pap!

Nothing is easy.

Living out there is tough. But at least there is a process. You get what you work for. Nothing is free and pole to the guys who think it is easier out there.

My view is that it is easier to make it in Kenya simply because most Kenyans are lazy and are waiting for the serekali to do something for them. Or their boss to increase their salary. Try doing that there and you will be broke for the rest of your life.
