I have plans to set up a general shop..
..nothing fancy..just plain ol'General shop.. in Umoja or South B.. opportunity also in Juja.. not yet settled on that.

shop space on groundfloor of a flat..not keen on getting one that is going concern..

.. time span for setting up is between now and June 1st..
..
Any pointers on what to watch out for??

i have several unemployed friends and family thus manpower/labour available..

General running of a shop is not necessarily time consuming or tedious..i think..hence believ it would just be a passing platform for idle time..especially the labour-hands..

Jus incase i'm missing out on something..would really appreciate input.

Well, that one on labour,I would suggest you reconsider.Look for some one who is willing and seriously needs a job. Select the best but don't go for any one just because they are idle.Your family members not matter how you want to help them should come as the last option.

On your availability, have your spare time to spend like 1 hour a day just to orient yourself with the happenings especially in the evening.During this time, peruse the books/records to make sure that everything is alright.

All the best.

Always remember that money in a general shop is not made from the usual stuff like milk and bread or even anything that is manufactured. You need a proper strategy if you are to succed especially where you are paying rent.

A shop is not something you take lightly it requires research, commitment, discipline and hands on approach in the inception period.

in a general shop the margins are quite low so it requires a person who will put a cap on unnecessary expenditure so as to maintain the cost of ur goods low hence maintaining a competitive edge on the market. .

In your case you want to appoint Idle relatives to run your business Unless that is a charity Org. I see you failing withing the first year.

I insist you put up a marketing/business plan first, know your suppliers and your niche market, then identify quality staff who can maintain a good relationship with customers and last and not least Identify your USP[unique selling propositions] even if you are on the first floor if you have good [USP]they will come.
