I just cant believe what these goons have made me go through. I came with a foreign registered car to kenya and just when the foreign permit was about to expire I got an urgent business to do and flew back leaving the car in the country. I sent my cousin to pick some things for me but was aprehended by KRA officials and the license was expired for just 7 days. I have been to times towers for three days now trying to clear the mess but am still being told i should pay 8,000USD as taxes for the car. Incidentally I cannot even register the car in kenya since its a LHD but these goons are hearing none of this. What is the way forward for those who might have gone through the same

Unfortunately, there are people who try to evade taxes and other regulations like the 8 year rule by e.g. importing a car as though it is destined to a neighbouring country (usually Tz and UG). Once registered there, it is brought into the country (with the necessary permits) and driven around forever. If they’re demanding that taxes be paid therefore, they’ve concluded that you intended to use the car in the country all along.
Dont know whether there is any law / regulation that allows them to fine you and escort the car out of the country...................

There is that issue of bringing car back but my issue is quite intriguing since my car is LHD, thus cant register it in kenya.

@freiks; don't be so hard on KRA officials calling them "goons". Remember; the whole saga started with you not renewing the permit for 7 whole days! Why didn't you send some one to renew it while you were away?

The KRA officers are right on this one. And as explained above, there are many people who try to evade paying tax by pretending that the car is destined for another country.

Regarding the LHD: you might need to get special clearance from the Minister for Trade.... but bare in mind that this ia what is eating Henry Kosgey...
Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

@ freiks,

had you brought in the car using carnet de passage document? if yes, then you should first renew it, then go to KRA and pay a penalty...they are not supposed to force you to pay the tax if you are not intending to import it.
...besides, the presence of a safe alone does not signify that there is money inside...
