@ sihingwa, assuming you are still using the stock /default call application, start it, go to contacts, press menu (I think it's the second button on the left on IDEOS), select import from sim card and you are done.

As a cheap smartphone, the IDEOS is quite good but I have to say [if budget is not an issue] the iPhone is much better!

To use iDEOs with Airtel, surely there must be a way, there's always a way. Let the time come...

You can actually use Airtel line on an Ideos. I've just set up one. Thing is you have to set up internet settings manually.

@Jus Blazin, I'm able to make voice calls when I use airtel on IDEOS, but internet wouldn't work - the little letter 'E' that appears on the top of the screen doesn't come on, subsequently internet is off. My assumption is that it is because it requires 3G. If it is APN' where is it set?

Thanks @sumuni

However you said "...after the download is complete long press on the homescreen..."

Which is the home screen and where do you long press?

The home screen is the first screen. Then you long press anywhere on it. The home screen has the call button, menu and browser icons at the bottom.

@GG, go to Settings - Wireless & Networks - Mobile Networks.

Under Mobile Networks, first select Data Enabled. Then select Use only 2G Networks. Lastly, select Access Point Names. Select the Zain/Airtel settings. Edit the APN, Proxy, Port, Username and Password as per the Airtel settings. I had to check online since am not an Airtel sub.

That should work.

Thanks, will do. But right now I have downloaded something called JuiceDefender. It is supposed to manage the currently humongous consumption of battery power by activating the links say every 15 minutes (configurable). Since I cant use the touch screen and chew gum at the same time, I will follow your APN advice after a few days.

Other than the better cameras on high end phones I can't see anything to pay more for, the ideos is really good! Wish it had a small portable charger.

Thanks @Blazing.
This thing is actually quite good. Was actually thinking of giving it away. The market applications are amazing.

I had the same problem with G1 Android phone. I could not make a call if my credit was less than 16/-. I called customer care and they advised me to buy their daily 10MB bundle. I did this and the problem seemed to go away but then a new problem came up where the phone bought the daily bundle about three times a day. I have the ideos and have subscribed the daily bundle and so far I have never experienced any problem

@bittok, your problem with daily purchases had nothing to do with the make of phone. That was safaricom's system error in duplicating the daily purchase request. Like I said earlier about the sh16/-, whenever you are browsing (without bundles), the system holds 2MB worth of airtime (sh8 per MB). When you purchase data, you, in effect, ensure that your current airtime is not split between phone calls and data. Your bundles will take care of the data and thus you can use your current airtime on calls or sms till it runs out.

Gosh, if you have ever laid ur fingers on an iphone, then you'd know the real meaning of a touchscreen...This phone is more of a press screen. Not worth it at all.

Been trialing IDEOS on airtel for the last 2 days. Works well except for the fact that I was completely unable to download anything from the market. Tried for the 2 days to unload a small app called Busy Message unsuccesfully. When I put back the scon sim it downloaded in less than aminute. Im not done with using airtel yet, as airtel costs as much as 50% less than scon. Will try the experiment again when airtel go 3G.

have also had the same problem with an orange sim card, which is quite odd given that am able to download content when using dolphin and operamini browsers. could it be a deliberate attempt by Google to lock out other operators and only offer exclusive access to content to scom only?
It is a curious fact that of all the illusions that beset mankind, none is quite as curious as that tendency to suppose that we are mentally and morally superior to those who differ from us in opinion.

I got an Ideos for my mum the other day.Not sure she will adopt touch screen tech so easily!

I have both a blackberry and an iPhone. BB is used purely for emails and talk, while surfing is reserved for the iPhone. Both are great products, depends on what you do more.

@kula I thought your motto was "go for the cheapest". Was thinking you would be on Motorola c113 with simcards in your pocket or China twin sim but wow!!! You carry the best phones (which you hopefully bought at safcom including the ideos) and put phoney sims in them? Aren't some people full of contradictions.
