After several complaints by pple who lost money thru' fraudster who duplicate ATM cards, the anti fraud Unit has warned that these fraudsters are really sophisticated they are using gadgets called skimmers that are attached to the ATM and reads or scans your ATM when you are withdrawing ur money.

Read more about ATM skimmers HERE

Sorry to hijack your thread but also be warned of the Banker's checks being circulated around... They are many and fake... Two friends have lost money. One lost 1m after a car sale deal and released the car, the other was an order.

I was also being told of an email they are using to say you have gotten an order from Kampala Serena for unprinted t-shirts... and they continue communicating up to the point of collection.. then they give you the fake banker's check..... Careful people... careful with your businesses and dealings.

@Selah,
Skimming is not new.In Chile,there is a college where it's a subject alongside pick-pocketing.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

The one for Bankers Cheque is terrible! In some cases there is no way of avoiding being conned.

I am told some con men are so connected they actually get the details of the fake Bankers Cheque inserted into the banks system - for some banks. When you are about to close the deal [and you seem nervous/suspicious], they give you the bankers cheque and accompany you to a branch of your choice so that you can have it authenticated. You present the bankers cheque to the bank personnel - random - they check in the system and tell you it is okay/authentic. You go sign the papers and hand over your car + documents. You show up at your bank and deposit the Bankers Cheque. A few days later you are contacted and told it is fake! The fellows contact their person immediately the deal is done and the details of your Bankers Cheque are removed from the system and tracks covered - especially if it is someone who understands the system properly.

I don't know what kind of system audits are employed in some of our banks but I am guessing they are very weak!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

I think its advisable not to release any documents until funds are lying comfortably in your a/c. RTGS and/or EFT area fast methods to use with insignificant cost. what is 500/- compared to loosing all your loot?

A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man

This is the tricky bit. Some people will not send money until they have the documents! This is the loophole the cons use. They reverse everything.

Let me ask you, if you are buying a car from a random Kenyan, will you send them the money while you have not received any documents from them?

One person has to do their part before the other one. You can go to a lawyer only to realize later that the identification documents they used were fake!

Well said. Trust is always an issue but how then do we do business?
If am selling you for example a car ama kashamba, its upon you to do due deligence, coz am not parting with any docs until i see the cash.

If there is collusion with an insider, collusion defeats even the strongest controls as the person who is supposed to confirm authenticity might be the one compromised. What i think is integrity in some of our bank employees has really gone down. Nowadays i trust bankers as much as i 'trust' the police officers who are supposed to protect me.

When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart.
