@Intelligentsia..

Very hard to know the economic life.

On a recent trip to Uganda, we had a bus KBJ with 271K kilometers. The engine condition was tiptop, no struggles whatsoever. It dawned on me that the bus does about 1300kms (Kampala-Mombasa) a day, maybe 5 trips in a week.

on average that is 5*1300*52 = 338K kilometers in an year. Knowing some of these buses, e.g. Mash, Coast, they normally last about 4-5 years before replacement. That would imply total mileage of 1m kilometers or so, before disposal.

Same mathematics with a matatu.. for a saloon car, i think 200K kms is pushing it, for a 4x4, i think about 400K kms is over the limit.

I think that the economic life of a car will depend on its use and mantainance. Some drivers comfortably drive cars long after the shocks are worn which end up damaging the body. Didn't we have a wazuan selling a 20year old car on a different thread?

@Kangi,

What has age or mileage got to so with an engine knock? A vehicle is not human. It is a machine and if well maintained, it can run well for your entire lifetime. The problem is that we have a problem with maintanance of anything mechanical. We want to repair what should be replaced. Most of the mechanics in Kenya are 'mechanically illetarate'. They never go to mechanical school. They prefer apprenticeship then go on to try thier luck on every car with its hood open. If your mechanic does not have a copy of your car's manaual and actually reads it, you are headed for a big disaster. That is why most serious mechanics specialise in one car and read everything on it.

For those of you who go to the ' masters of all cars' mechanics at Makaburini, shauri yenu.

Overall, the life of any car is dependent two things;

1. Regular Service.

2. Genuine Parts.

I may be wrong but i have observed that diesel engines will generally outlast petrol engines, any day.

I know of a local tour firm that has landcruisers doing more than 300,000 Kms ! The beasts are fast and more than economical, especially if turbo-charged.

Hi guys can u import a car that has done more than 200,000 KMS. One a 2005 YOM is on offer to me. Has it been overused? Pls reply before i commit myself. Also is a grade 3.5 acceptable in kenya. pls advice.

@IDP Using the eight year rule, it falls within the allowed period.The month is also critical in the sense that it will attract some 65k for every year that is less than 8 years.So in your case assuming the month of manufacture is April and we are in Feb, then prepare at least some 130k in penalties over and above the normal duty.
......

the charges ie duty (as opposed to penalties) are dependant on the CRSP of the make/model according to KRA.... and are a %age of the value of the vehicle rather than a fixed "65k per year".
(...just to share information)

@IDP - Grade 3.5 (IMO) should be acceptable. See restrictions here

And also see jap auction grading (in the process learn some japanese) here
http://japanimport.co.uk/auctiongrade.htm

then you can jipanga.

Thanks @ KBD, &1589, Mkimwa....

I sent a Rav4 recently (mileage > +80k) to car dealer/broker in Nairobi who sold it on to a mteja. By the time it got to the end buyer, who I happen to know, it had 'lost' about 50k mls. Now how was I going to tell the deliriously happy buyer that the true mileage of the car was post 80,000? and not 30k as he was made to believe...
... yet he knows that I originally sourced the vehicle.

Soon some of my cars will be coming with a sticker on the windscreen with my Trade Name! If people discover some of these cars are having their mileage tampered with ... where does that put me & my 'self-advertising' Trade name stickers?

Shipping raly takes two weeks.. Its the time that it takes for there to be a ship that lengthens its juu hizo meli are not as many as za Jap.. which is what makes UK shipping expe
