Seems the crooks are upscaling.

I too got an sms. But this time the guy was saying that he had just arrived from Uganda and was at the Busia border. He was requesting I clear stuff for him at Mombasa port and gave some KRA/KPA reference numbers that he got from his man at KPA blah blah!

Never bothered to call or sms him!

Someone beeped me. I did not know the no so I ignored. The same no beeped again after about 10 mins.
Finally he called:
Me: Hello
Caller: Tumelipwa tuku uwe.
Me: Mmelipwa pesa ngapi?
Caller: Elfu mia tano.
Me: Jinga, mfanye haraka.

I am still alive 3 months later.

reminds me of this other one ....

guy sends a message (by mistake) with some code.

calls back later, introduces himself as James and claims the code is for clearing some containers at the Port and that its very confidential. please delete that sms.

kubaff calls the following day claiming he's managed to 'clear' the containers. He's so happy i deleted the sms coz the containers were worth 20 milli and the fact that i didnt attempt to clear the goods myself (defraud the jackass)means am a very good guy. Says as a sign of appreciation dude will give me a brand new motorbike. Since he's in mombasa he requests me to sms him my names so he can register the motorbike in my names.

Day 2, dude calls me around ten/eleven and tells me the bike is now in my names and that it will be delivered to me the following day. Meanwhile he'll will be flying in from msa in the evening and would like us to meet for coffee as he hands over the reg docs for the bike...and as we get to know each other.

tik tok tik tok....at around 6pm, dude tells me he's missed his flight but he will come by road we meet the following day.

Day 3, i receive a call from a guy who claims to be the OCS for some place just past Voi claiming that James was involved in an accident and since the vehicle had no insurance cover, he's been arrested. They have charged him 35k and since he had no cash with him, James has requested that i send 35k to the OCS and that we'll sort it out when he gets to Nairobi.....

brary fool!!

Then there are others who called me sometime back to inform me that i had won 50,000. Apparently they wanted to find out how much my mpesa has ever handled, and how much i had in my mpesa. i told them that the maximum(30,000) the account has ever handled is less than that reward price. they wanted me to load airtime on my line apparently for expanding my line. I asked him how much my line can handle, and he said the 30,000. I requested him to send me that maximum and keep the rest. the guy was adamant and i requested to speak to their boss, who maintained the same position. anyway, to cut a long story short, i earned some few insults. And yes Its true that guys get conned.

But also be very careful when responding to those smses...

over the holidays, i got an sms... it started with a "Hi, i have renal failure and we are planning for a harambee for transplant etc bla bla bla.." i cant even remember the full details but yes, it was in that line... and since the number was not saved on my phone, i knew it was one of those kamiti guys... so i was drafted a nasty sms telling them they try another one coz that was too cheap for me to buy.... then something told me not to send... so i decided to play along to see where it was headed...

Me: it depends. where is the transplant?. Response: KNH

I decided not to waste any more coin on the useless communication and cut it off. Never called, nothing.

Later, like two weeks after, a friend of mine (yeah, same lady i met in town today in a different post) called me and told me of one of our old friends who had renal failure and requires operation bla bla blas... and it hit me.....the sms.... The sick lady(she had a new number that i dint have and assumed i had) was already pissed of with me for my "it depends" response coz it sounded very rude coming from a friend now you can imaging if i went ahead to send the nasty one i had drafted...... I was at so much pain apologising for that sms. So, yeah, sometimes it could be a genuine case.

Why do they use the line of recruitment to the forces does it mean people are that desperate to wok there?

It's called psychology. Kenyans have come to accept that to work in the military, you have to part with some money - sad but true. It is therefore easier for a conman to convince you to give him some money if you have already believed he's about to get you into the military.

That sheet of paper used by MPESA agents to record transactions is a gold mine for any con artist.
Safcon should modify the forms to exclude names.
ID # and signature should be enough.

@all, while at it, avoid depositing/withdrawing big amounts from the corner dukas... apparently, the high end users info will be "sold" to the scammers mpende msipende. i agree with @half full sufferin con should rething this business of Name, ID, signature. The fake ID nos being used by crooks to register lines have your name and no.[from Mpesa agents] but the other details are fake. @kangi... do not mean to scare u but i once dealt with a case of where the scammers had accurate data and fine details.. best option ignore the calls/sms.

Thank God for Wazua! I also received the sms above, this morning and almost txd back to inform the sender that its a wrong number... But just as i was about to do so,my instinct told me not to and am soo glad i didn't! The idiot's number is 0722 167462

@Wazua admin or anyone who works for safcom/airtel... please assist us in stamping out this scammers via tracing the numbers listed above. I still have the sms on my phone and wouldn't mind producing it as evidence...

Washindwe!

Got the one for Mungiki and it scared me to pieces! Glad to see it was fake.

@Leona, call Safaricom's 234 and report the number. They'll ask you to forward it to them at no cost to you.

This seems to be the trend tghe other day a guy sends an sms to my wife giving western union code and some nos.for containers to be cleared in mombasa of cos my wife calls the guy to inform its a wrong no. the next day guy calls very happy with nmy wifes honesty says he is rewarding her with a yamaha motorbike flatscreen tv and toshiba laptop each from the three containers. guy even calls me to tell me what a honest wife he has and he is cmng with his range rover to meet the wonderful family I tell him hes welcome and he claims to be from tz next thing I hear the guy has been involved in an accidnt after voi and the muindi he hit has taken him to a police station where they are demnding 120k for repairs his agent is in dubai and he has no friends in kenya so my wife should send the cash then he sorts us by chq on arrival I wonder why he cant sort them by that cq and when I inform him accidents are insurance matters the story dies the guy disappears

@Maich,
I have five of this sent from an Airtel line (0733406057).....Not that i would fall for this kind of CRAP but i thought registering our numbers should have made identifying of this scammers quite easy. This one should be traced and locked up especially after invoking the name of Maj.Gen Kianga.

Njung'e.. You've made the very bad assumption that our Government actually went through with this project... Si they cancelled it halfway..
