KQ route expansion pays off with 23pc passenger growth - Latest earnings update on Kenya Airways indicate a 23 per cent growth in passengers in the quarter to December. This is attributed to the aggressive expansion and price cuts on the domestic routes executed by Kenya’s Airways top management. Passenger numbers for the quarter rose to 163,201 passengers compared to 133,301 passengers in a similar quarter the previous year. The price cuts are said to have strongly contributed to increased frequencies to Mombasa and Kisumu from Nairobi. Profit increased 66 per cent to Sh1.4 billion in the six months to September on revenues of Sh41.21 billion driven by higher passenger numbers, lower fuel hedging costs and higher yields per passenger. Africa has remained the airline’s key market with growth during the third quarter increasing by 4.2 per cent to 439,555 during the period on increased frequencies to West Africa and entry to new markets such as Juba. Since we are in the process of covering the stock, we remain neutral at this point.Applause Applause Applause

What -ve passenger numbers?

http://kenya-airways.com...aspx?colm=&cid=3628

Seems they grew passengers on every region.

RPK (overall) +8.9%
Passengers (overall) +7.3%

Europe +5.4%
Asia +1.8%
Africa +4.2%
Kenya +23%

I expect Kenya to grow further in 4Q with the dedicated Mombasa Shuttle + even lower fares.

Within East Africa, KQ has 'given' seats to Precision Air especially flights to Dar & Kilimajaro [KQ does not fly these routes but codeshares with Precision].

LOL... That's why Warren Buffett says buy a business not merely shares...

I am out of cash... otherwise this would be a good buy!

http://www.capitalfm.co....tch-simulator-5502.html[/quote]LOL... KQ cuts dividend from 1.75 to 1/- i.e. while others have been raising the dividend, KQ has LOWERED theirs!

BTW, where is @horton?
The simulator seems to be for 737-800s... So what about 777s? Do they still have to pay to train abroad?

Feb'09-Feb '10 price of KQ: 20->65
Feb'10-Feb'11 price of KQ: 65->40

Is this thing heading back to 20?! Maybe we can all wait for this slide and cash in. Now, airlines tend to be cyclical following economic trend. Economic numbers look good this year so the current price make no sense. Lets see how low it can go....

The share will follow the good results. What's going on is just the market voting, and the market can be very irrational. Time to buy more...

Foreigners are Selling...Wazuans are thinking of rushing in...What a Divergence
Kenya Airways (KQNA.NR: Quote), one of the leading carriers in Africa, slipped 3.55 percent to 40.75 shillings a share.

"We saw a lot of selling on KQ mainly by foreign investors, who interpreted the carrier's third quarter performance results as below target and the effect of raising fuel prices which has a large effect on its costs," said Waweru.

Kenya Airways reported on Monday a 9 percent rise in passenger numbers. [ID:nLDE71D19L]

Am one of those ppl who got in @ 63bob kitambo. It was purely speculative, i didn't understand the metrics & i still don't. I paid the "price" as i watched it go to the floor, i salvaged some money by averaging down but made major losses overall.

If there are any value prospectors in the hse, these are the cons i'm looking as i consider touching it again @. Any advise on why someone would buy? What price?

1. Highly competive & price sensitive (global & regional) consumer market.

2. Volatile market; very sensitive to consumer finances, politics etc.

3. Low margins and huge overheads (including rising oil prices - what is the current and future hedging situation and plan)

4. I have not seen any major innovations / business aggression from management recently. Compare mobile comm and banking markets. Where will value / growth come from?
Someone correct me if i'm wrong: Management have overstayed and are in a comfort zone... this wouldn't happen in a multinational like Barclays... when next do we see double digit growth?

Does Naikuni have too high a public profile that KLM is afraid of a backlash to replace him with another CEO?

Of course, I would like a CEO who understands the business so not just anyone...

Of course, GoK is to blame as well. Airlines depend on bilateral agreements i.e. when you fly to new countries/destinations, you require agreements between both countries.

Now... kalonzo has time for shuttle diplomacy but not for negotiating/cajoling the countries for new routes.

KQ took years to get into Angola. To protect TAAG, Angola offered a codeshare [split revenues/profits with TAAG even though KQ does all the flying] for only 3 flights/week. KQ wanted 5 flights/week.

Time to be worried as a KQ shareholder, minus the domestic pax numbers...pax only grew by 3.8 percent...yet the price of oil has shot up by 25 percent...lets wait for the 4Q numbers...growth in the 2H might be negative...i will dig more.

Very gloom indeed, buying more doesnt seem to be the solution! Even if its averaging down y buy something with little prospects wouldn't it be better to buy somethin more hopeful to help cover our KQ losses???
