Guys,

Jana I tried to sum up how much it costs to drive to per month.. Here is what I found

Car Fuel 350*30= 10,500
Parking 250*25= 6,250
Car Loan (0.8M @16%)= 22,680
Insurance (7.5% of 1M)= 6,250
Service 1,000
Other Misc 1,000
Total cost per month KShs47,680

This is just a car. We have not counted the costs that it creates e.g kuenda out ovyo ovyo, stress za jam. Is this why we have road rage so high in Nairobi?
Now surely how is the middle class supposed to survive this system?

Ask yourself whether you WANT the car or you NEED the car. If its a WANT, follow K22's advice. Many times we put ourselves in situations we cannot sustain.

Picture this. If you sold your car, your total cost for the month would be (other factors held constant) lower than or equal to sh10,500 that you would spend on car fuel. Thereby saving you sh37,180 that you could actually invest in something else or add to your savings. You can imagine what you could do with sh37,180 every month!!! We are talking of approx sh40,000!!! Good grief!!!

A personal car is the biggest liability and doesn't make sense most of the time. Think about it, if you're buying to floss you can only floss for 2 months then the damn thing is outdated.

BBI will solve it

A car is a liability that's for sure.... but i think its a necessary evil especially if you have child. I lost count long time on how many times i had to dash to hospital at 1, 2 or 3 am because there is this uncontrollable fever hitting 40! Which nairobian will wake up to take you to hospital at that time? And with the kind of insecurities, how many taxis can you trust to be available at that time? Well, i know you will say those who cant afford survive but..... Our lives have also become busy and you have to run to several places in a day - if only they could reduce the jam.... or you have school going children and have to drop them.... mind you, it is cheaper using the car for the family than paying some of these school transport systems.... eg you will find a child in a certain radius is charged like 20k on transport, if you have 3 kids, thats 60k add your transport and that of mamaa...

I hear you guys. But the thing is that is just the car expense. Everything else has gone up. Housing, food, school fees ( kwanza school fees!!!) What I could not understand is how guys are surviving in this city and whether at he end of the day... whether we will take back anything to wherever we came from as the goodies of hard work in Nairobi. It seems to me that what is made here remains here...

But surely, don't you guys see a very serious crisis in the next 5 or so years? Now banks have started laying off and this is the start of another big retrenchment cycle.. what happens to those guys who had mortgages, car loans, school fees to pay?

Maybe its cause I am flat broke and everytime I see someone issue a 1K note, I think they are showing off...

@Bwenyenye you can reduce the cost above by

- reduce the insurance value/premium ama chukua 3rd party at 7500/year and live with the risk...
- Buy seasonal parking (@3K/Month)
- Car Pool - I do and pay Ksh 150/wk on return fare jioni
- Buy a car with smaller engine - 1000 - 1300cc or buy a piki piki....
