@Murira ....

If you focused on the mediation and not the mediator, you would realise that Raila has actually succeeded.

Why do I say this; because by Gbagbo asking for a neutral Mediator, he is acknowledging that he wants to talk. What he is doing is looking for some high ground because RAO seriously kanyagad his neck.

In Kenya, it took Kuffour, Annan, Hillary Clinton and finally the TZ prez to get a very uneven breakthrough.

My question now is why do you expect Gbagbo to fall over after just one onslaught. It will take many other emmisaries to convince this guy to let go and RAO's first shot is as important as the final shot that will be made.

Well how well can it be put. It is not only internationally even locally. Raila has a basic problem of not calculating what he says. He will never let an issue pass without a comment. Remember Ngilu's case ?. It leaves people asking about his ability to balance what he says.

The Ivory Coast assignment was in my view presented both danger and opportunity to RAO as a senior Kenyan politician. The moment when he verbalized his honest opinion of the solution that he deemed fit in IC, then he lost the opportunity to be a mediator in the crisis. Even if AU and UN approached him to take lead, on retrospect, he should have declined or opted to play a less visible supporting role. But I can understand where he is coming from: the opportunity to be cast as Chief Mediator in a high profile - media saturated environment was simply irresistible. When it unraveled as it has, then he has to take part of the blame - these are not my words - but Gbagbo who refereed to him as biased. Why is this important in the high octane Kenyan politics? It simply cast him as a leader incapable of recognizing his own limitations - if the payoff is high enough. Much more critical is the fact that as a head of state, he probably would be called upon to mediate and negotiate on a daily basis groups and individuals with competing interests - whether economic, political or social. Those will require sober judgment to navigate and simply not to be seen to be doing something. Any unresolved issues have a nasty habit of coming back to bite. On the basis of these two criteria, he has failed. I am sure other opportunities will still come up for him to demonstrate if this is a habit or a one off. I am afraid that so far, his choices suggest to be the former. I am sure there are other wazurans with better arguments on this but for me this will do for now.

I couldnt agree more.

Hypersensitivities is a challenge we have learnt to live with around here.

There is absolutely no need to belabour the point that Raila ought to have declined the appointment if he has any pretence of self respect left in him.

He didnt!!! - that speaks volumes!!!

Trying to sanitise his position as probably being that of firmly helping push Gbagbo out is stretching imaginations too far - to somehow accommodate the guy from this monumental miscalculation.

Are these fellows seeking to change the meaning of the word mediator!!!

The latest on this subject is that the
Government of Ivory coast has decleared Raila a personna non grata!!!

If thats not shameful, then I dont know what is!

Africa Union, Wake Up!

Its really irresponsible of the entire African continent with a population of 1B, 90% of the negro population to entrust the responsibility of mediating in Ivory coast to RAO, it is even more surprising that they did not seek the opinion of Njore, Ngalaka, murira ... before making such a critical decision.

Oh!!
What I didnt know is that AU are gods - completely infallible.

A school of thought opines that Railas appointment was to avail our beloved PM an opportunity to show AU how this things are done - since he has not missed an opportunity to critique them for inadequate ation or none at all!!!
