In yet another historical move, mobile phone services provider airtel Kenya has today announced a further slash on its call rate to Kshs.1 for its growing customer base.

The move that comes barely six months after its last call tariff lowering by more than 50% to Kshs.3 in August last year, now represents a whopping 67% call rate slash in a move geared at further breaking telecommunication barriers in the country.

Speaking at a media conference where he announced the launch of the new Feelanga Free Kilasiku (everyday)! call rates, airtel Kenya Managing Director Rene Meza said the move had been taken as a conscious business decision in line with the firm’s strategy of offering affordable communications solutions to its customers. You sure about that? Ever heard of Manchester City (England - UK) and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan ( Abu Dhabi, UAE - Middle East)?

Do you consider a football club an investment. British governernment has already collected a lot of money in taxes.
eanwhile ManC losses have hit £120m per annum

@Elder you make good points, and I appreciate your reply. My first reaction was to celebrate the gains for the consumer.

Then the inevitable: I feel it is difficult to have a no-frills airline while pining away for the on flight meals and personal packs.

And finally my puzzlement at whether this will finally crack that Safaricom loyalty nut I see so prevalent mashambani?

This is becoming like a no-frills calling rate.

How will you subsidize phones at this price?
Or increase retail shops?
Or adopt new advanced technologies?
Or give free calls to customer lines?
Or keep telecom companies as the best employers?
Or create endless scenes of breathtaking Kenyan landscape?

But come to think of it, when the chips are down, Kenyans will choose price price and price, three times a day. Or will they?

If the target is not to make billions in profit and have large overheads they can always do the important ones from the above by using voice to attract the users and make your money from the add-ons.

And I don't necessarily want any of my service providers to be the best employers. Good employers is good enough for me unless I work for them.

On reflection it seems that your post is snarky which makes my post all but unnecessary but whatever....

Now..where does this leave dear old safcom on the investment side of things?

I think we are now witnessing the dofferences in the capitalism of the emerging markets Vs. the old western model.
i.e high volumes, low margins Vs. high or low volumes BUT high margins.

Simply put Safcom has a bleak future.

It is my opinion Safcom is being chopped at the feet in terms of new subscribers i.e school leavers e.tc who are indeed the future.

That thing should be at 2 bob.
