Now that users here seem to be asking for hints, here are some of the possible explanations put forward when I asked the question to my to my friends.
1. the lines assist linesmen to determine if a player is on offside position
2. During laying of the turf the pieces are laid in opposite directions to interlock
3. The lawn mower had just left the pitch (after mowing to & fo across the pitch)
