I already wrote down my investment in Uchumi. I kind of admire what Ciano and team are doing. Cleaning the s*it left by CK has not been easy.
Time is money, so money is time. Money saved is time gained in reverse! Money stores your life’s energy. You expend your energy, get paid money, and store that money for a future purchase made in a currency.

@tony stark uchumi's best days may be right ahead. Judging a stock solely by a bad past performance may cost an investor a good opportunity, Case in point NBK @ 2.90, kplc @ 7. Judging on a good past can also burn fingers- eg cables, sameer, kengen. @vvs i agree with you that its a matter of risk vs return analysis when they relist

Nakumatt vs Uchumi

The battle of retail giants continues. Uchumi grows 17% and Nakumatt 12%.
Uchumi come in at 9.6b (Jun'10) turnover and the big brazen boy estimates 30b (Feb'11).

I can't wait for Uchumi to come back to the market. But it's clear who is the elephant now. In day's past, the elephant was a weak baby and SUchumi was king.

The Re-listing will give Uchumi the ability to borrow again as well as confidence for a Rights or Bond Issue...

I would love for Uchumi to be re-listed. Firstly, management would have to take their job more seriously due to the increased visibility. Just as importantly they are sitting on alot of assets, including their brand name that are performing at a sub-par level. At the very least, it would allow existing shareholders begging to get out an avenue to bring closure while allowing plucky investors such as me take a punt. There are however alot of ifs for Uchumi to actually return positive results to investors....but surely any bourse worth it's name has to at least have one true retail stock on its board.

Umenena hapo! Indeed we need a pure indicator of consumer purchasing power.

Ciano needs to pull up his socks on marketing, the uchumi brand is no longer the brand of yester-years. ciano thinks he does not need to put a lot of money marketing a well-known brand but he needs to realise that consumer trends are changing fast. I tend to think JC is a good turn-around manager but Uchumi needs to up its game and either get a good strategic investor or he gets a proper war chest from the shareholders.

So true..past performance should not be used to measure future returns!

Alot of housekeeping still needs to be done. First i shopped at Capital centre and this trolley almost drove me crazy. Some of the 'wheels' were not operating. Then i tried Koinange street branch, the place is sooo crowded after the shopping exercise had a seriuos headache. I miss those early days as a teenager when if i ever visited the city, had to visit the Aga khan branch and just walk about. Then Uchumi was a supermkt.
