Southern Sudan is the next biggest investment market in Africa because the infrastructure is zero. People need buildings, power, highways, hospitals — they need everything.Market is ripe but depends on how the referendum works out!!!Wanna bet? u right dude.been here for 2 years now and the opportunities are massive. Let's pray they separate and be independent come Jan 2011, and be reasonable not to get into Dinka vs Equatorian issues.
The GDP for this part of the world could even grow by over 10% if things are okay

CIC?Insurance market is also ripe but they will have to beat the likes of UAP Insurance who've been there since 2005(first foreign underwriter) and have the highest market share(over 35%)+lots of experience. The other 5 companies share the spoils!!!Local companies undercut on premium rates as there is no body to regulate the market like IRA in Kenya.Tough call but lets wait and see. Jus Blazin wrote:@Apple Bees, opportunities in media?? of course. the main and most popular radio- Miraya FM is run by UNMIS (who will be irrelevant in a peaceful and prosperus S.Sudan)is not commercial as such. Other FMs are also non-commercial e.g Catholic's Bhakita. There is only one TV station-SSTV (they used to be in DSTV but pulled out)-No wonder PALEK just gets support from Kenyan votes in TPF4. Some of the main newspapers- Citizen, Juba Post,Khartoum Monitor are not well developed (well sometimes when you read them you might think Citizen Weekly- the Kenyan official tabloid- is very professional) The biggest exploitation will be the returning residents (There are so many in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, UK, USA, Canada and Australia). These people will change the perception a lot. The numbers will be there (am talking of those who will have Purchasing Power). At the moment, though, the economy is NGO driven

That is one of the reasons they are issuing rights to raise money. CIC is the most successful Coop Insurance Companies in Africa. They have been approached by governments of SS, Rwanda and Malawi to help develop Coop Insurance companies in these countries.

how likely is it that things will turn out Ok? as in no fighting and a peaceful referendum? that's a tall order, but the war weary top guys really would not like another war, especially those who have been enjoying 'peace dividends' i.e good cash (enough to buy a family house in NBO or KLA). Those who have enjoyed during the past 5 years will really try to avoid getting back to war. Those who have not benefited, who normally see Kenyans, Ugandans or Dinkas as those who have gained at their expense will lose nothing should the war be called. The only good thing is that they may not have strong generals. In any case, a friend confided that should there be any war with the North, this time it will be fought in Khartoum (of course this will be deadly because those daring Dafurians from the West will also join in, as well as the disgruntled Kasalans in the East. The worst case whould be having the war along the borders esp contested areas of Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile. Whatever the outcome, there'll be big business in South Sudan next year. If peaceful separation, a good business climate will be created- EABL, Co-op, Nakumatt etc will join in. Uganda govt will also be constructing market stalls in every Southern town (most market traders are Ugandans). If the separation is through UDI or contested and this leads to war, well, emergency NGOs will take charge. They will still need supplies of food, clothing, evacuation/hibernation items etc. High risks will mean high returns

SS is where the dollars @!!!No small money there - count in triplicate in KES whatever you want to buy - a bar of chocolate will cost you $5 while the same will cost you KES 90 in Kenya. Some useful info. for anyone planning to travel there: Travel Permit: KES 3,800 (valid for 3months) and KES 6,460 (valid for 6months). Embassay is located in Upperhill near Chancery Bulding i.e. Bishops Gate 6th Floor. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Mark 8:36

Now we've learnt a whole lot about South Sudan thanks to the Kenyan media houses - ni kama South Sudan iko Kenya..... NKT!Anyway,av learnt that South Sudan has a lot of opportunities for anyone who'd want to work his/her mind a little....advice-if you want to start up business in SS,get into a partnership with a Sudanese from the South, give him his cut and your good to go but preferably a Sudanese who's lived in Kenya. This is to avoid the tussle with government officials on registration matters. Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs - Farrah Gray.

Guys, can you expound on this..what do you mean by a hut and container? Are they any hotels over there? How is the security situation? It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.
