Wazurians,

Currently at 14.01, and with end of fin year in Sept, should we expect Sasini to rise higher anytime soon?

What has been your experience with it? Your advise will be highly appreciated.

All depends if merali is offloading or not!

I like the industry but not the 'controlling shareholder' but it has been great for speculators.

Despite coffee prices rising and rising, this stock does not seem to be responding. In fact, its lost around 8 percent since this post was started. Does anyone here think Sasini is a worthy buy at current prices?

Likewise I have also been wandering whether there is some reason as to why the prices are stagnant. If not then this might be a share worthy buying at the prevailing price.

@youcan't Sasini is cheap at these levels and you could definitely buy it....

Though i would much rather put my money in kakuzi or kapchorua tea because they are at exactly the same valuations with less uncertainty...

I agree with@ guru 267.Kapchorua and WTK will report half year in November.Rainfall amount and distribution on their growing areas has been good hence high production.Prices not as high as last year but still good. The exchange rate better than previous year. The results will beat the good ones last half year. And they promised an interim dividend for the first time if the half turns out well.

It'll be interesting to see if it closes above 14 today. It has been slowly edging up the last few trading days

I think we can expect a big move in this one for two fundamental reasons: one, tea prices are so high and two, the shilling is so low. This will affect their P+L positively for sure.

@ Kularaha - Coffee prices have also risen and with the weakening of the Kshs. my guess is that turnover will hit or exceed Ksh. 3bn. (half year 2010 was Ksh. 1.3bn, full year 2009 was Kshs. 2.1bn)- as I've stated in another post.

Announcement of FY 2010 results expected around Jamhuri Day going by last year's trend - but as with all Merali companies you could be either pleasantly surprised or in for a nasty shock!

The most disappointing thing is the dividends they are giving out. Nation newspapers highlighted that on Tuesday's business section and all I can say is shame on you Williamson Tea!

BBI will solve it

www.standardmedia.co.ke/m/?id=2000022756 Kenya coffee output drop but earnings soar. Interesting to note that coffee goes for 757 dollars per 50kg while beans fetch half a dollar for a kilogram

Not true...

1) Beans come from berries. The flesh has to be removed. It's like comparing price for MADE Tea vs the LEAF...

2) Also the $757/50kg is for the topmost grade of coffee [There are multiple grades but AA is considered the best]. I am sure the farmer who sold these 'AA' berries got way more $0.50/kg. Don't compare a Mercedes to a Nyayo Car...

3) The berries need to be processed into beans then stored. The berries are transported to the factories where the [expensive] machinery is used to process the beans. For the expensive/quality beans the process is longer.

4) Beyond the auction, there are transport costs, insurance, roasting, etc

What farmers need are many options to sell their produce... Comparing coffee prices at auction vs farmgate prices is silly at best... The total 'value' of materials in your laptop is less than $100 but the 'expertise' in putting it together costs way more! Thus you pay $2,000 for top of the line laptop...

@vvs, Good analysis or is it analyses? For tea the conversion factor is roughly 1kg made tea for every 4kgs green leaf. Green leaf could give less than $1 to the supplier while we see made tea fetching $3 in MSA weekly Auction. @Wazuans(1) What is the conversion factor (cherry to beans as in 50kg bags)? (2) How many kgs can a coffe tree produce per year? (3) At current market forces, which is more profitable; coffee or tea? I'll appreciate ur input.
