Hi guys,

Been planning to get a 1.8T car but just came across info saying that the 2.0A is easier to maintain and run. I've also noticed that the 2.0A is much cheaper than the 1.8T.

What I know is that the 1.8T will not guzzle unless the driver has a heavy foot i.e. the turbo does not kick in until the gas peddle is stressed. So I always assumed that the 2.0A's consumption is much higher as long as the turbo does not kick in in the 1.8T.

Anyone with experience or in the know please share what they know about this?

Are you talking VW or Audi? - they share the same engines (and are both VW group anyway). I've also read somewhere (trying to remember where and will post when I find it) about the 1.8T. Using the specs of the engines, I'd think the 1.8T will be thirstier on fuel if one has a heavy foot - as u said. Power & Torque - the 1.8T has more of these of course. If you are not too interested in more power, the 2.0 I guess would be the car.

@tuvok: I'm not a peddle to the metal type of driver, but can be aggressive at times. Was looking at a 1.8T on the premise that it is more fuel efficient and will serve me well on my various out-of-town trips. But the info I've read says that 1.8T is a guzzler, is very problematic coz it requires high octane fuel (91 and above), and eats up all its oil faster than a normal car. This worries me!

@ Sasha.. Why not try out a TDI :) Reasonable performance and very good fuel efficient. Not sure about what quality of diesel required, but there must be a reason why CMC would be selling TDIs.

@tuvok: Can I assume that by putting a smiley face after your advise, you know how troublesome the TDis are. Would not touch them with a barge pole regardless of how cheap they are!

Aha.. was curious about why they are so troublesome? Is it due to the sulphur content of the diesel we have here? Coz if that is the problem, it would be a real shame, considering how efficient they seem to be.
Anyhow, I decided to shelf any Audi/VW plans for the moment, at least till the 2.0 TFSI based cars are 'more affordable'

Yeah, they are extremely efficient, but have very few connoisseurs! Even CMC were averse to dealing with them at some point.

What does 'more affordable' mean? I noticed that a 2004 1.8T Passat or Audi costs about USD 1,500/- more than the same year's 2.0 FSI engine. I still don't get it!!
