I am new in the Club....Wazurians I need your help.
Have been away from home for almost 15 Years. If I am to return home with my family (3kids 15,10 and 8) how much will I be expected to spend monthly. I have my own house in Mombasa- Kisauni. The expenses should include cost of education with any good Academy (middle cost schools).Will decide whether to own a car when am there.

You help is appreciated.

Hope it helps; Just my uninformed estimate but in Kenya Shillings
150,000 per child per year
600,000 others per year

Trust you can get a job at least 70,000 monthly in Mombasa. A blessing if your wife works also.
Welcome back

@Muganda, good start, but uninformed indeed :)
150,000 per child per year = 450K
600,000 others per year = 600K
Total = 1050K = 87.5K pm

As per your estimate, mzeekijana ought to make (not necessarily earn from employment :) Way more than the 70K)Pray Pray Pray

@mzeekijana, welcome back (hoping your "homing decision" is not tied to the figures that may be thrown here.

I won't help with figures; I'll delve into 'near useful sideshows'. I come from the same area. You might need to consider these:

- Since you left, free primary education was introduced, dragging down the already battered public confidence in public schools. Repercussions of this somewhat affected some of the 'Academies' of the 90's. Remember Mary Cliff?

Top of my head I'd recommend Nyali Primary, St. Augustine Preparatory and to some extent Highgate Primary for decent private schools.

I'm not sure if the dear 15 year old is covered there though; high-school selection is a bit fuzzy.

- The roads are fairly ok; some got tarmacked (Mishomoroni/Mwakirunge-->Formely Zakheem Road). The Mombasa-Mtwapa road (New Malindi Road) is in great shape. The Kisauni-Mtopanga-Bamburi road still manageable.

- Public transport charges are erratic and fairly high for those commuting and making use of the Nyali bridge.

Depending on where your home is and your choice of schools, it may, in the long run, make sense to own that family car; keep that at the back of your calculation sheet. Kisauni ni kubwa bana.

Else, Khadija Primary playground finally got a neat concrete fence; no more shung-peng smoking around that area. You may consider it if push comes to shove Applause Applause Applause

Please do not 'return back home' but "return home"smile
I have no figures to assist but in a country where not all are able to live on a $ a day, i bet you will be high up there in terms of living standards.
Welcome home
I care!

@ mzeekijana,I think this is pretentious- there is nothing glorious about 'being away from home for 15 years' unless you were under house arrest,self exile or living under a dollar per day,meaning that you do not need Wazua to tell you about 'the situation back home'

@Muganda
Thanx for the estimates.It's not as difficult as I keep on hearing from others.As long as the Education part is reachable the "others" can be adjusted.I'll have to get the exact figures from the institutions.
@Outvestor
U reminded me of those good olden dayssmile so St. Augustine Preparatory and akina Khadija are still there, that is good. Tunabangaiza (what ever this means)I might be outside lakini not doing as good as people might be thinking.That is why am thinking of "returning home" and not "returning back home" kama vile thuks wants it to be.It's a good picture u painted for me.
An as for you
@Famooz
You might be right I might be pretentious, if this will pay for my kids edcucation then y not.Most of us were forced to move out not because we liked it it's was due to the situation then.Remember, not all those in the diaspora r doing fine. We might be living from hand to mouth but atleast it has been better than home and now have a ka-home of my own.If it's exile or house arrest I leave it 4u 2 decide but as for me, I think it's time to make an aboutturn.
