Whoooph! Michael Joseph, Safaricom confirms seeing/liking Quantas advert before doing the Safaricom one.

@LesanMike misquotes: "M.J says this is the most expensive advertisement ever to be produced outside S.A."
@Michael Joseph responds: "@LesanMike I did not say that! What I said is I saw the old Quantas ad before we did ours and I like the idea"

The only thing that saves Safaricom from being sued its pants off by Qantas is that copyright law doesnt protect ideas. But being a copy cat makes Safcom look really bad.

Safcom should have stick with its former niko na safaricom ad; ile ya Kericho tea plantation.

"Making of" also here; http://safaricom.co.ke/index.php?id=1152

It brought me to tears especially after seeing the shooting at Mt Kenya. Copy-paste or not, this ad cost more than money! Dedication.
Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.
My 2 cents

"I’ll tell you that as a “creative person” when it comes to originality vs. relevance, you pick relevance every time, (thanks Alex) can’t tell you how many times this proves itself true, especially if you’re from the 99 percent school of thought. I hate to break it to you, but originality is overrated and there are very few “new” ideas in this world".....quoted!!!

Finally watched the Qantas adverts (1998 & 2009) and though the two have similar concept, the SCOM one is a lot more POWERFUL. The music in the Qantas one is just plain flat, while that of SCOM has a lot of umph!

My vote goes to SCOM

This is the add that the Kenya Tourist Board must wish they had made.

BTW; do you remember "The Bank With a Vision" advert by NBK 15 years or so ago? it was said to have cost sh25m to produce...in the mid 1990s....

It was also on a similar theme...

Surely British American, is that the best you could do? Unlike Barclays who are riding on the 'Robot advert' to introduce something new, this guys have just reproduced a terrible version of the same old ad we saw 20 yrs ago and thrown it onto our screens bila.....

BBI will solve it
