Folks - i once saw a post on pig farming but there was nothing substantive to it. @Impunity2008 appeared to have infor that could help, but then he never replied to a couple of emails. Anyways, that's the past.

For those who have experience, kindly share. What's the best breed to rear? How do you manage feeding? What are the marketing channels besides the monopoly Farmers Choice?

Thanks Akiti.

Do you have experience in this area? I will talk to them definitely but i fear these might just be arm chair economists - long on theory, short on experience.

Your question(s) would be substantively answered if you sacrificed some time and went to farmer's choice (its free). As for the choice of breed, it depends upon many factors; chief among them the depth of your pocket. Some breeds are very pocket friendly in terms of feeding cost but fetch less because the end weight is less. You can avoid farmers choice by selling pregnant sows or piglets not for meaat but to farmers who wish to start out or expand the numbers of their pens. This option however requires significantly more effort in terms of marketing than simply raising and selling to farmers choice.

Thanks Wally5. Really helpful infor. It doesn't look like there are many pig farmers in this forum.

I'd like to talk to you more about this. Can you please inbox me at icapital.consult@gmail.com?

@maia - great stuff. I have taken a print.

The trick in this game seems to be - right breed+ right feeding +right marketing.
