@Mkimwa,
As i said,Busia-Kisumu is now quite okay except for bumpy ride just before Kisumu and also the stretch from Kisumu to Awasi has some tricky potholes but not that bad......No need to detour via Mumias.after Awasi, the road is Nyweee all the way NRB......Bon voyage!

I concur.

A quick update on the Mau Summit-Busia section (Nov 2nd 2010)

First...

@Djinn,
Kipkaren is the name......You should try Kisumu-Busia next.Bad sections between Kisiani and Bumala town have been fixed and the road is mzuri.

Yes, these sections have been fixed - the ride is faster and more smoother (Ksm-Busia 2 hours flat)

Now, I am not sure what happened since August, but from Mau Summit for abt 10-15km the road is getting pretty bad - patched up and with small annoying pot holes....at some point after Londiani they have started widening the road and there is serious earth moving equipment (worth billions) shovelling hills, moving rocks and felling trees....I think that equipment is helping degrade the road but its not too bad.

From Awasi into Kisumu @Guka you mentioned the "slight" potholes - well, they are now PhD potholes and make for very dangerous driving, esp if in a small car - these holes are mainly on the edges of the road, abt 1/2 of either lane. So the trailers/trucks/buses move into the opposite lane to avoid them, and even if you are oncoming in a small car, they go by the maths and you have to leave the road or brake hard until they veer back - EXTREMELY dangerous IMHO.

Aside from the road conditions, the other MAIN hazard is Akamba buses.

@Djinn,
You are right.....i have been avoiding that route by using the main Eldoret highway and teeing off at Matharu (Between Burnt Forest and Timboroa) to Kapsabet and Chavakali.....Only problem is,the road between Chavakali and Kakamega is CRAP!!

Hey Guka, doesn't that take you much longer???
Agree the road between Mau Summit and just before Kedowa is degenerating every other and that before Awasi dangerous, I still prefer it to following Eldoret!!!

The works between between Mau Summit and Awasi are progressing, the contractor seems to know his stuff!!!!

If you are going to Kisumu yes....but if you are headed to the border town of Busia,it's far much shorter.....You actually end up saving close to 40 Kms from Nairobi

@Guka - ok, I have looked at google maps and I see what you have described is the route to Busia...now what about to Kisumu? After teeing off and getting to Kapsabet...what next?

I recall once driving to Nandi hills then to Kapsabet - a very very scenic road....and ultimately direct into Eldoret (but not via Turbo). This might be a long way to get into Kisumu and I'd rather go via Turbo then Kapsabet (and perhaps enter Kisumu through Kibos or sthg).

Djinn,
That would be a de-tour unless you are out to have fun on the road.From Kapsabet you proceed straight to Chavakali and then down to Othumo......Very smooth stretch from Kapsabet to Chava.....but the rest of the journey to the Citi is pure crap!

I agree the Nandi hill descent into Muhoroni is so scenic.Once in Muhoroni,you may proceed straight to Awasi on the Kericho-Kisumu highway or better still,turn left and take the much quieter and smoother Kibos road.

to avoid the deteriorating mau summit - kisumu section - esp from Mau summit for abt 15-20km and near awasi for abt 15-20km (this particular section seems dangerous now for a small car driving against trucks and buses). I don't mind the scenic route
