I was surprised to learn that some members have managed to negotiate discounted brokerage commissions and pay less than the std 2%. How did you manage this? Is it by virtue of working for a broker?

It depends on volumes and frequency of trade. If you trade huge volumes or frequently, you qualify for discounts at most brokerage firms. But they will not approach you. You approach them! Do your homework on the kinds of discounts your broker offers and approach them [with facts in your finger tips] and demand your discount - in a non confrontational manner of course. If you do low volumes infrequently they will definitely not give you the discount.
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

I also pay 1.8% while their standard rate is 2.1% but its pretty hard to negotiate this rate unless you really earn them some serious commissions from your trades

I believe, the maximum brokerage commission is 1.8% for trades of a value below Kshs 100,000 and 1.5% for trades above Kshs 100,000. The additional levies are for NSE, CDSC, CMA etc.

The exception to this is on odd lots, which used to be a minimum of Kshs 100 regardless of the value of the trade. I am not sure whether this is still the case.

As for the minimum, brokers are liberty to charge whatever they deem to be OK with them. Theoretically, this can even be zero. Obviously you have to trade pretty high values/frequently to get lower than the standard commission rates.

I guess I will have to calculate the volume of my annual trades to determine whether it is worth my while to request for a discount. Thanks to y'all.

i thought it has to do with the amount transacted and not the number of shares (volume). or do you count money in volumes

I believe the rule is MAX 2.1% for below 100k and 1.4% MAX for above 100K, seems most are talking below 100K. BTW Negotiating fro 2.1% to say 1.7% means you negotiate KES 500/- from a KES 99,000/-. Unless you are placing this orders very very frequently, isn't it being kind of stingy?

How high are your volumes per annum? To illustrate for a volume of say 2M per annum the savings would be 0.22% X 2M = Khs 4,400

(Difference between 1.78% and 1.56%)

Obviously the lower ones annual volume the less one saves in commissions.

You can get upto 1% commissions if you negotiate hard and have the frequencies to prove it.
Or register as a broker agent and share the commission with the company if you are trading huge volumes which takes you to paying sub 1% commissions.
