Obiero.

Once upon a time a luo opened a shop for his wife. Other luo women used to visit the shop and gossip the whole day. The kikuyu women next door was busy attending to her clients.

A luo man was retrenched. He bought a mercedes and eat the rest of the golden handshake with women. Now he only laments how he was victimized. His kikuyu mate invested in a car wash business. He has never looked back.

A kikuyu man used to diligently buy shares of certain company every month from his paycheque. He now has an impresive portfolio. His luo friend was diligently at Nairobi west drinking every day talking loudly and boosting alot. His is now deep in debt.

It is called the biz mind, goals and approach.

Equity is a private company. If no luo has ivested substantially in this bank how do you expect one to be made a director. Haki Yetu ????

I normally eschew commenting on issues such as this, but I will weigh in this time round. As a shareholder in EB, I am actually unhappy about this state of affairs. We are not talking about the Board of Directors here. On the BoD, EB has 5 out of 11 Non-Central Kenya Directors. You could have an argument on this one about the core investors wanting to take care of their interest.

However, when it comes to Key Management, surely the rest of Kenya could at least provide 50%. I would actually expect higher, but 51% at the very least. EB is a Regional Bank and their management ranks should reflect as much. It is a shame that it does not!!!

equity is not a parastatal.

even then, could not care less if the entire staff was made up of jacob zuma's and king mswati's wives.

Once upon a time there was a company called Thabiti Finance. The employees conducted biz in their mother tongue. " Ehero kelna file no". "Omera eduaroo chul pesa adi". All the directors and the GMs were from the same region.

Mwanahisa please give us a company owned by a luo and provide the breakdown of the management.

Thankyou for calling a spade a spade. When I point out that fact, soem idiot screaams here that am attacking soem pple from western region of the country. In the naem of being sensitive to tribal issues, we look the other way even when can help our brothers grow up. Like, a jang'o wants to live at large while his ukuyu fellow works hard. When the ukuyu becoems rich, the jaruo jinga says it is unfair for ukuyu to have so much money while others don't. So, issues of directors in Equity is based on controlling shareholders in a private company. You cant say oduor otieno is a genius as he found the bank strategy, vision and everything set for him by one Gareth george and terry davidson.

a kenyan is more interested in the pride of a distant cousin becoming the director of some company than they are in 1)growing their own wealth, 2)buying the company some day and 3)giving jobs to whomever they feel like.

Wololo yaye, @winston is right, and our tribalism is beginning to show on this thread...

No one disputes Nelson Muguku is a brilliant entrepreneur and deserves the success. Viewed against today's business daily lead story Revealed: The waning value of directors in corporate Kenya, it makes sense why as @seeders says, one would believe a more varied board would bring greater value to the business.

Maybe this nyef nyefs should take time to listen to Jimmy Gait's song "Sonko"(Kiguta gutiri kindu kionaga....ruta wira na utige wana)...

Seems, I should have kept my "trap" shut, as per my first instincts. For the record, I am not from Western Kenya - although it would not matter even if I were.

Equity Bank is a listed company so its relatively easy for me to get that kind of information at the click of a mouse. I am not able to do that for private companies, so I am afraid I can't give you that information. There are not that many companies on the NSE where the founders are from Western Kenya.

However, the point is not to compare companies owned by people who trace their antecedents from Central Kenya versus others. I am equally uncomfortable with a company largely owned by Englishmen, Asians or others having 80% of their management ranks being populated by persons from their kinsfolk.

In the case of EB, if they ever want to shed the tag of a Central Kenya outfit, I think they have to work on increasing the diversity of their key employees. In the mean time, I continue to laud the good performance of the bank. I just happen to believe that it can be done with more representation of management from across the region. I rest my case!

Another tricky thread. Actually a disproportionate number of senior management is from Central Kenya just like a disproportionate number of owners. It has to do with the fact that the company started in Central Kenya. A lot of these managers are relatives or children of owners and they get recommended for jobs by old friends. Old Boy Network.
There's no difference between this and for example Indian or Jewish businesses. It actually comes down to the ties of friendship/family.
