Why does the government allow this?

Simple. The biggest beneficiaries are in government. You don't just pop up from nowhere, make a cool 750m and say adios amigos. Hiyo pesa mpaka ugawe equitably.

Why do you think guys fight for 'big' government jobs? It's neither the salary nor their vision of how they can help the country. You will be surprised how many people will be willing to come 'see you' carrying a serious briefcase - brown envelope too small - if you are in the right position.
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

@Seq Lu - I've just watched the clips. This stinks to the high heavens!!! Same company, same 'pata potea', different numbers to sms to, different cost - hapa iko kitu. Ati "sms charged at 500/=... Send four smses a week and qualify for the friday draw...". And people fall for these bullshit? I noticed the one with seemingly bigger [and more] prices than the 500/= one is being charged at 50/= per sms.

Oh how I wish we had a government - a functioning one that is!!!

Like Mbugua Njihia said, the game itself is not bad, but when people start running a promotion the way Shinda Smart did it(not actually having the winnings beforehand) then its only a matter of time before we have a few SMS promo disasters on our hands. Then the attitude towards mobile commerce will become rotten and ruin legit opportunities the emerging digital content industry

For the avoidance of doubt: I do not support this raffle. It is not a promotion and it has no social benefit.

You see, some times I buy Charity Sweepstake tickets. Even if I don't win, I know that my money goes to some social project that will help some people.

These SMS raffles are just simple plain gambling. I suspect that they have been created to raise 2012 money for somebody...

Forgive my ignorance...
-Is it fair to presume competition is licensed by Betting and Licensing Board?
-Requisite license fees (6% of budget etc) are paid?
-Making it a legal gamble and ensuring winnings are indeed paid after some due diligence?
-And any unclaimed winnings are pooled for the sake of charity?

While acknowledging the frivolous nature of the promotion, I think it just stands in the same category as another Casino/ Lottery / Sports Betting. For a desperate person, it seems an attractive option, but there's no deceit if the money is paid.

Agree with you Muganda, I mean the promotion is licensed, operates within the current laws and is voluntary!!!!

quite true. A fool and his money are soon parted. Nobody is forcing anybody to participate. But human greed is just too strong.

Good topic @Mukiha, I saw it in the Nation in the morning and the same thoughts crossed my mind...very unfortunate if it's a scam.
