@vinii; it's not the movie culture that has died. Kenya Cinema's location was encroached by the "lower town" Nairobi. If you go to the upper-town side, the situation is different. Sarit Cinemaplex gets house-full shows quite frequently, so does Village Market, The Junction etc. Also, the average movie-goer drives to the movies and Kenya Cinema has no parking....neither has 20th Century, so expect them to shut down soon Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.

@ Mukiha Don't you also think that coffee houses such as Java and Dormans have taken away some potential movie goers?? However thanks for giving me hope, next time i need to watch a movie with mama i will try 'upper - town' but will bring along my own pop corns from Uchumi - don't want exploitation ya 'upper - town' !!! If you are an eagle don't hang around with chickens; chickens don't fly....

SAD!!....Brings back some good memories especially before Nairobi cinema came along.I remember the day "Missing in action 2" premiered......Pepsi na njugu. @Vinii,  ...You remember the yellow pages advert?.My friend says,"Let the fingers do the walking"  Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

@vinii - You are confusing the poor guy. @annsal - There was no 'Internet' - definitely not accessible on mobile devices. This browsing was of a different kind. As Njung'e put it, you let the finger do the walking. @Njung'e & @Vinii - I hope you didn't also frequent Eastlands cinema - six movies one ticket. He he he. Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

...I once logged in inside Kenya Kenya Cinema. I had identified a suitable location...By then, there were no nosy Bouncers.... What an experience it was!!!
...and for the continous shows...after loitering in town the whole morning, I used to go and take a nap at Odeon Cinema in the afternoon...just with ksh 5!!!

......when the movie was about to end, we would stop 'browsing' and the ladies would appropriately adjust their skirts (hakuna mambo ya tight jeans!) and button up their blouses just before the light came on..... the men had the bigger challenge of 'cooling down'. .........woooooohh, good old days..... Eastlands cinemas were a NO.....but in early 80s i used to catch a movie once in a while at Dandora cinema (Is it still there?).......I loved Casino coz of the chinese kung-fu movies.I have memories of some Bee-Gees music they used to play during intervals.....and yes,on Satos,with 6 bob,you could catch two movies...lol Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

talking of movies, do walk-in flicks still exist?
There used to be movies by 'Tazama' and 'Factual Films' on open spaces within the estates, and the announcer occasionally weighed in with his input (sometimes they got it all wrong!).

Ah! This Fox Theatres in Kenya, part of the group that owns SimbaColt motors, and in fact owning the whole 20th Century building, Mama Ngina St, and more importantly rights to 20th Century Fox studio movies in East Africa.
I wonder whether part of the problem is they have an easy ride being paid royalties when 20th Century Fox movies are screened on all competitors theatre halls. There was even a dispute preventing movies such as Salt premiering at the same time in Silverbird movies.
So I can't remember the last time I ventured into their movie halls - not much effort to move them to the next century. Sarit Centre really pissed me off with several shows starting late, not very clean theatres, poor sound, and screen out of focus!
I mean, how do you show a whole 1.5hr movies out of focus on more than one occassion?

The death of inner cities, killed by the Sarits, Westgates, Junctions, Prestiges, Village Markets. Modern, small, compact; not unwieldy cinema halls of yore. I will gladly allow my sons to go for a movie at any one of the malls (generally safe, no cops to harass them etc) - I will never allow them to go to the city.
Who remembers Suncity Cinema in Eastleigh? BTW, my first movie in a cinema hall was "Airport 77" at the Nairobi (stalls, not balcony), taken by my dad. Before that I was a great follower of Factual Films in the estate field.

What happened to it - I think the owner (called Josephine? and who has dedicated it to his son killed in an auto accident) sold it off so its no longer there?

I partly blame it on piracy....nowadays at kshs. 50 u can get a clear copy of a movie that has not even premiered so why waste kshs. 300 to kshs. 550 on it,,the only reason those uptown cinema haven't closed is probably coz guys who go there have extra chums to spend. The Strong Do What They Want,The Weak Do What They Must!

The cinema experience is good but i think the cost is too high. What would happen if the Cinemas adopted a low-cost model like that for Zain..  .....more clients....more business

They couldn't handle the heat and now they are out of the kitchen. How do you kill a place like Kenya Cinema? I remember watching Ten Commandments, Sound of Music and Breakdance - thrice, remember 52nd Great Week? Anyway which preacher is taking it up?
