Can a listed company be bought by an unlisted company?

And why not? Nothing unusual there. We have cases where smaller companies have bought bigger companies than themselves.

Yes they can be bought then the buyer decides to take them private or let them remain listed.

I did mention in a previous thread that Bharti is talking to AK. They will initially form a partnership where AK products will be rebadged with Bharti colours. Plse don't ask me for a link or source - I'll have to shoot you first.

An unlisted co. taking over a listed one? Who remembers Barclay (note, not Barclays) attempting to buy out Crown Berger and failing to get to requisite no of shares to control and delist it?

Meanwhile they go about their business like nothing is happening. They are working on the mombasa metrofibre. In addition to their partnership with BBK and its SME clients they now have a partnership with HF. www.telecompaper.com/news/article.aspx?cid=759819 .The odds are stacked against them but man are they confident!

It would be a colossal waste of cash for Airtel to buy AK... Better to use cash to upgrade 3G network...

The future growth is NOT 'big' corporates but the small businesses & home users... Think Equity Bank who went for the untapped masses!

Now... same thing here... Safaricom has gone for the masses... I hope Airtel plays in the mid-market (I am mid-market guy) so I can get even cheaper, faster, better internet! Buying AK's 600 clients with cash is a waste!

with the right product/service, you can target, even physically visit, all 600 clients and capture them in one week.

That will be a good move. As a stand alone entity AK does not have the muscles to compete with the likes of safaricom, Orange, Airtel or Yu. I think for them to survive they need to merge with peers (Jamii telkom & KDN) create a supermarket for everything data and defend it with all their mighty. My second option will be to find a suitor with deep pockets. The likes of Airtel or Orange fits perfectly well. To provide the cash since they have the expertise. As a shareholder i will not mind the dilution which may arise from either of the options as long as shareholder value increases.

The question is does it make sense for Airtel to pay good cash for AK?
I say no... but of course AK shareholders would disagree with me...

Since I have no shares in Bharti Airtel... it matters little to me!

Airtel cannot buy AK.... That will be a total waste of cash....

I mean they only have 600 clients which to me is insignificant and their profits less than 50million....

Why would i pay billions for this??

buying a listed company is also a way of getting yourself listed. Remember stanbic and cfc. Though it was hailed as a merger, the standard group and liberty have effectively taken control of cfc and got themselves listed.

Don't look at the 600 AK customers, look at the metro ring in Nairobi and the other one being built in Msa
