Duty Payable for a Toyota IST

Anyone out there that knows how much duty is payable for a Toyota IST 2003 model (1300cc). Please share the information. I am planning to import one and the CIF price is US$ 5,300. Is this a fair price?

Depends with your preference Mr. Evolve. With that amount, I can get a better deal than a Toyota IST. Do more shopping and bargaining. As for the duty (which also applies to Plats, Vits and Scion of the same capacity) you will pay a grand total of KSh 106,661.all inclusive

I'd propose that you keep checking on the website of either IBC Japan or Tradecarview.com. In many instances, IBC Japan cars are of better quality and they will tell you if it has any fault (including a ciggarrette burn on the seats). They have better customer relations but their cars are more expensive. In the latter, they will not be very specific but they are much cheaper. Remember these are member associations. Check for atleast a month for different makes and once you identify the right car, make a bargain, they will be happy to reduce prices for you. Good luck

@groupie,

Those figures are to precise to the last shilling, i thought cost was based on the CIF and the extras on the car - (you know like leather seats,chromes etc etc.) Do you want to say its kinda of standard - just curious and i would be happy if this were true.

KRA does not look at the CIF value of your car but rather uses a Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) list from local car dealers i.e the cost of a new showroom vehicle which is then depreciated up to 7 years.

Therefore a new IST that costs KES 1,557,172 is depreciated by 70% (2003) the duty amounts to KES 158,938. Get the current September CRSP list from KRA website. Additionally the IST quoted is 1500cc there is no 1300cc so you'll end up paying the former...

At a similar CIF price, i got a fantastic Toyota wish (7 seater, 4wd, 1800cc) from Jans-trading. u cud surely get a better deal.

Jans Trading company cars are many in kenya.......but what i know is that if you are not interested in millage....then jans Trading has better offers interms of price!

I wonder how kenyans are told about millage by the dealers locally sourcing from jans trading company......the truth is .....most of their cars come with high millage....which they are able to sell by lowering their price...


Somebody tell me.....are kenyans very much concerned about millage when buying cars???....ama they buy the model + design + colour.....

Does a high millage affect the quality / performance of the car?

The average car does like 5-10000kms per year so in 8yrs should be about 40-80k....there was a report on how almost all cars have their odometers rewound....ati only 5000kms mileage!!

To safeguard against mileage fraud, ask for JEVIC inspection certificate and verify details on the website.

kweli kabisa 5000Kms is sheepish any millage below 50k km is tampered with i even know of suppliers from japan who admitted the jp government allows them to rewound 20K km thus my 92,000km subaru landed at mombasa as 72000km

@ Allan: it is true most of the vehicles which are imported have hit over 100,000 kilometers in the 8 years they have been in use out there. As Sizzla has said above, always insist on Jevic inspection report which will cost you a bit but will give you details of all major changes done on the vehicle.

I know locally the cars in the yards are rewound using a certain sofwtware which can read and edit all information stored in the ECU.

I'm missing something here...

Dont all cars come with JEVIC cert./report?
Why would it cost more?

What more details (apart from basic inspection/chassis+eng no. mileage/1st reg. date) do you get on/from the JEVIC inspection?

Isn't the JEVIC inspection (in Japan) not the same as the one done in Singapore or UK before shipping a car?

@ Digitalis ''lanata''....you are correct....i remember once i tried importing a certain car .... and the supplier tried pushing it soo had.....the millage was 108000km ....... this the supplier confirmed after i requsted him....they had displayed a good price......minus milage.....

This happens in most offers.......when i said the millage was sooo high he told me.....that their other customers in kenya buy ....every month.....and the always buy........vehicles over 100000km Shame on you Shame on you

I am sure this cars find their place in the market ama huwa wana-rewind???
