Anyone with first hand info how I can import used clothes and shoes in bulk containers from abroad and the requirements? I'm researching and any info from SK will be highly appreciated in my endeavour to invest and create more jobs. Also if I can get bulks/bales for sale in Mombasa and for how much and location. Good evening.

Importing second hand clothes/shoes doesn't create jobs.It kills jobs.Kenyans have a misconception of second hand things.While they believe that they are cheaper(the real junkies are).Most used clothes in Kenya sell at higher prices than when they were new in their countries of origin.

@AliBaba; while I agree with you that imported second hand goods kill jobs,I find it hard to believe that 'Most used clothes in Kenya sell at higher prices than when they were new in their countries of origin.'

Can you give an example to support your assertion?

E.g.,a new pair of jeans costs XXX in USA while a used mtumba is YYY in Kenya

@ ali baba

and they don't kill jobs per see...

just walk to the open markets in gikomba,mutindwa,kibera,jogoo among others (not mentioning sunbeam & other stalls in the city) and you will realize how many people rely on the mitumba!

If these are jobs then it only means more compe thus,the ones already doing these 'jobs' will earn less

MUKIHA,

Shoes for instance.If u ask the price of second hand shoes at say Nyayo mkt,those sellers charge higher prices for those shoes than new ones in countries like USA !! Exhibition stalls.If you go to some of those stalls and ask for those newer shirts hang on their walls,you might be surprised.Most of those shirts (and some are used) sell at higher prices than same shirts in USA's Walmart store.But kenyans who are so blinded by Gikomba things think they are getting a deal.Wake up guys and smell the coffee!

mukiha,

Ali Baba is correct. I have done an experiment with jeans. New US jeans cost as low as $20,depending on where you shop; the average price is $30-45. Mitumba jeans in those so called exhibition halls,some poor imitations,cost from Ksh4000 upwards. Compare and contrast. Prices for t-shirts/polos are even more laughable. Kenyans wear some of the most expensive cloths in the world. Somebody was bold enough to quote an 'imported' suit at Ksh18000,something one could get brand new retail at half that price or less.

MKTPLZ,

I've been doing the experiment and comparing items in kenya's exhibition stalls,shops and supermarkets.Kenyan products are quite expensive considering they are sold in small quantities.Kenyans are being ripped off by this greedy businessmen.The only cheap thing in kenya is raw food like cabbages,collard greens,etc.

This is very true about different prices here and elsewhere,case and point there were some sandals that were a hit in the UK over summer and were retailing for GBP 10,now we walked in into Mr Price with my wife only to find the same sandals retailing at KSH 4,500..surely!! and please save me the margins talk...

JARIBU,

I know you are getting ready to rip off kenyans by over-charging used clothes.Just pause abit and listen to your inner self.Do you still want to exploit people who are hungry,jobless,etc.Our GOOD LORD will reward you if you show compassion.Poor kenyans have been ripped-off for more than fifty years by people who they trusted most....listen to yourself!

Many of these second hand clothes are made in Kenya EPZ's,shipped to the west and returned here second hand,so to some degree we are doing the job of shonaring nguo,otherwise the economics of second hand goods in the third world is very complex, it is not straight away a negative in many ways,a proper analysis would qualify for a Doctorate.

Now Jaribu,you may have the money to venture into some business,know how it works etc,but find that it is tightly controlled by a group of Mafia like women as i have often hard is the case with this business. That's when people get shot and others are left saying 'they shot him and they didn't take anything',just do your research.

@AliBaba & Marketplaaz.....

I am shocked...that anyone in their right mind would pay sh4,000 for a used pair of jeans or shoes!!!

With 4,000-bob,I will pick two pairs of brand new jeans and a pair of brand new pair of shoes [three items in all] at Enka-Rasha....and this is not the cheapest shop in town

Or if I like,a brand new suit....and if I go to Bunyala Market,I will get a findi to make two suits with the money!!!!

Anyone spending that kind of money on a pair of used jeans deserves to be ripped off...heck,if I were the trader,I'd charge them 8,000!!!!

@RickDees,

Mr. Price is cheap for those regularly shop at Woolworths...same sandals at the latter would have been 7,000-bob

....but then again; GBP10 = sh1,200

...add freight+clearing+forwarding at 10% and you have sh1,320

...add import duty at 25% and you have sh1,650

...add excise duty at 15% and you have sh1,897.50

...add VAT at 16% and you have sh2,201.10

...add their mark-up at 100% and you get sh4,402.20

....round it UP to a round figure....sh4,500....

Of course that assumes they are purchasing from a retail outlet in the UK!!!!
