@Vin, Thanks.....Am i right on the state of the road to Laare??.It's a close to one year since i used it last. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

@Njung'e: Absolutely! I have been postponing this road trip for the last 2 years. If that road is passable then it is better. The Laare route is very dangerous as it passes through homesteads and right next to some veve shambas! Plus after Laare, it is basically a wilderness until you approach Garbatulla! And chances are we may be the only travellers on the road!

Generally. the entire section of the road is smooth and you will be tempted to speed.
Between Mai Mahiu and Naro, there's a a small stretch that's still rough. Between Narok and Bomet- smooth but be wary of inconspicous shopping centres where you may need to maintain 50kph. On this highway, its also important to watch out for speeding buses from Nyamira/Kisii, especially if you drive by night. At Sotik, the intersection of Kericho-Kisii highway, expect sharp bends and episodes of uneven (though tarmacked) sections thereon till you get to Kericho.[/quote]
@Spend.Thrift - thanks - most appreciated. Want to break the monotony of Nbi-Nakuru-Mau-Summit - also there are now many diversions between mau summit and Kericho.

[/quote] You may not need to travel all the way to sotik from Bomet. You can use the Bomet-Silibwet-Litein route, short cut though the road has some sharp bends. This road was recently recarpeted hence smooth all the way. Branch off at Junction to Tenwek Hospital. Be conscious of your speed between Suswa-Duka Moja. There is a section indicated 70 (km/h) Some extortionist idiots in uniform will stand in the middle of the road to force you to stop. They will then ask for cash bail of sh. 5000 to book you or "kwani ulikuwa na ngapi?" "Never regret, if its good, its wonderful. If its bad, its experience."

Djinn, You have it.Avoid Bomet-Litein.....and man,the deviations on the Mau Summit-Kericho....I hope the contractor doesn't take ages. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

They seem to have been working on that section for ages - i recall even as far back as 2009 they were clearing trees and grading the side - mostly after Kericho towards Kisumu. Not sure if its the same contractor...I think we should send the Chinese down there to Kung Fu their butts...

@Djinn, You sure you want to try those corners with rack and pinion?.Get yourself an extra pair of hands.....While at it,i got a guy tempting me with a 75 bijuti 404 (Luxe).Is it possible to get trims and lamps for this model locally? Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Guys - me again - usual silly questions  From Muranga - is there a decent road to Naivasha - maybe via Saba Saba, Githumu, South Kinangop? Looking at Google maps I see these towns and have been to Githumu (but more than 20 years ago). Anyone? Trying to see if I can save on returning to Nairobi from Muranga and instead start heading westward to the border. Thanks!

Interesting you should ask this - I have always thought there should be a real road across the Aberdares road between say Githumu/Kigumo/Kangare and Njabini/Engineer. Am told butchers from the former used to leave in the morning and return in the evening with beef cattle from Kinangop. On foot.
From those same accounts though, the road can only be considered decent by one seeking to plot a route for Rhino Charge and with an appropriate vehicle. From Murang'a your best bet is Murang'a - Sagana [or Kiriaini-Othaya, for some twists]- Nyeri - Nyahururu - Nakuru. The Nyeri - Nyahururu road is under repair and the half or so of it that is yet to be done has quite a fair share potholes.
I truly envy your sense/spirit of adventure.
