HK's new airport is built into the sea [aka on reclaimed land] which is NOT possible at Wilson airport UNLESS the 'reclaimed land' is from the land-grabbers!

Also I think some crooks are targeting Wilson Airport [then Nairobi National Park]...

The problem at Wilson is there is NO more land to expand the runway [needed for larger planes]...

Nevertheless, I agree that Wilson airport should be expanded for the smaller planes [the various Cessnas, Pipers, etc] so as not to congest JKIA...

Cessnas, Pipers have never been the problem at Jomo....its parking for the big boys....nevertheless, lots of wilson operators use Orly...just south of jomo(10NM) to avoid the congestion and landing fees

S.A.A has a fleet of 50 and orders of 26 more. The average age of the fleet is 8.6 years. (Wikipedia) Ethiopian Airlines has 41 operating fleet and 50 on order. It also has the youngest fleet. www.ethiopianairlines.com/en/corporate/fleet.aspx

SAA, dont really make money....its a hit or miss thing with them. ET, is the only one giving KQ a run for its money...

However the claim that "they have the youngest fleet in africa" is a myth. The B757/767 and the fokkers are ancient....that should bring the averages down.

As for 540, anyone notice how the ATRs have quietly disappeared ?? its only 1 Dash 8 and a CRJ flying at the moment....

@Horton - Fly 540 was in the news recently about some leasing payments not made... The planes were almost re-possessed by the Lessors!

Someone asked how many of our 27KQ planes are leased and the question was not answered. Does anyone know?

I only know that the two Ambraer 170 jets which were delivered in June and are in service and the two Ambraer 190's which will be delivered in december are all leases.

BUT on the buying front there is the delayed order of Boeing Dreamliners which could have been the best thing to ever happen to KQ but TN threatened to cansell the order. Does anyone know if the Dreamliner order was canselled and if so what benefit there would be to replace that with Airbuses. My personal opinion would be that none of this two plane manufacturing giants ever deliver anything in time and if there is a promise to deliver the dreamliners anytime next time that KQ should stick to Boeing.

Lastly, is there hope (+need) that KQ will ever buy a Airbus 380?
Don't gamble; take all your savings and buy some good stock and hold it till it goes up, then sell it. If it don't go up, don't buy it...

@cicero, A380 is a nice kite to have, but which route will it serve? If you buy only one, you tie up a whole set of crew (and their relievers) to that type, hardly good value considering a 777 captain today makes Ksh 1.4M and an A380 one will cost more.
Besides, those goons at KAA will never get round to configuring the airport for the type, considering they cant even build a second runway.
Another problem for the A380 is it needs an alternative airport to land in, in the event that a reconfigured JKIA is closed for any reason - would they detour to Oliver Tambo (an extra 4 hours of fuel) having initially loaded 8 hours of fuel from say Amsterdam?

@cicero - The delays in the 787s has been costly to KQ in terms of

1) Lost opportunities due to lack of seats or even flights
2) The 787s are expected to be fuel efficient vs 767s
3) Newer planes have better technology & we need better IFE to fight the European carriers like BA & VA.

ok...all the B733s(ie 6 of them) are KQ owned and the 4 B772s.

They are leased from different companies...from SALE(singapore aircraft leasing ent), GECAS(arm of GE)

@Cicero.....they are actually "EMBRAERS" and those were bought second hand from various, only one, was new.

A380s would be pretty useless for KQ at the moment due to several reasons:
1.KQ is all boeing, cheaper for training, more common parts etc
2. Dont think they have like a standalone route with 555+ pax at the moment
3. Airport runways have something called a PCN= Pavement classification number. A380 ACN= aircraft classification number exceeds the Jomo PCN, so it cant land in NBO

Tanzania makes a play for Delta flights http://www.flightglobal....-hong-kong-express.html

And lousy KAA continues dill-dallying on expanding JKIA. Poor KQ will lose business to others at this rate!

The KQ share gurus question for you:-

What will be the market reaction (effect on share price)if KQ tripples it's net profit (compared to same time PY) for the half year ended 30th Sep 2010?

I think the World Cup provided a lucky break for KQ but I don't think it's sustainable. I used KQ last week and they have not improved in customer service, time keeping and price. I still rank them last compared to the other airlines I've used.
Btw how is Air Uganda? I see the former KQ commercial director Hugh Fraser, is the one running it? Has anyone here used them?

BBI will solve it

Positive earnings surprises generally tend to boost the stocks of companies that report them. The degree of the change in the price depends on whether the extent to which the increase in profitability is really a surprise.

You will be surprised by the number of people in this market who always appear to have an idea of what the actual numbers will be reported either through deduction or some more nefarious means. Just watch price action on any counter prior to the announcement.

I would hazard a guess that more than 80% (if not more) of any surprise on the NSE will have been factored into the share price by the date of the announcement. The End result is that the share price does not change nearly as much as one would expect.
