•Niue, a 260 square kilometre South Pacific island, is an independent state with a population of 1,398 people. It rarely records crime and the government bans importation of ammunition and firearms. The natives call it “the Rock.”
•In 2003, Niue became the world’s first “WiFi nation” in which free Internet is provided throughout the country. Each child owns a laptop after an ambitious project to provide the gadgets to minors.
•There have been no political parties in Niue since 2003, and the government depends on an informal coalition made of members from extended family ties.
•During elections, if two candidates tie, a recount is done and, if the number of votes is the same still, the winner is drawn out of a hat.
Niue has only one TV station, one radio station, the Niue Star and one newspaper, the Niue Star
