I'm afraid my thread might not be visible under Market/Review...so, with Wazua's indulgence, I'd like to post it here:

Hi All,
I'm prompted to bring this up again, knowing it was extensively and nearly exhaustively discussed in SK/Wazua and also because a close friend seems to be burning his fingers in such a venture by sourcing from an individual somewhere along Waiyaki Way-Nakuru Road (possibly a Wazua member)....

Looking at one of the threads I see some Skerians expressed interest in forming a sacco kind of thing and some notable members at that.

So, my questions, and please don't make me do the roll call, you know who you are who expressed interest in such a venture or got involved in it:

1 - Aside from all the hype seen on Wazua, about the market for rabbit meat...is there really a good market?

2 - Notwithstanding the previous question, did any venture take off?

3 - Has anyone had similar experiences dealing with quack rabbit breeders (who cannot sex the young ones or tell when they are PG)?.

Pls share. I am fearful that such threads may have prompted people to start RABBIT PYRAMID SCHEMES so to speak - i.e. "breeder" sells a pair of male and female rabbits at Kshs 6-8k on the premise that it will have a litter of 8-10, which after 4 months can each be sold for Kshs 1.5k, breed again after 3 months and another 8-10, etc etc.

I personally think this rabbit biz is over rated. I have been to 3,4 and 5 star hotels and not seen it at more than ONE place and have polled friends of different cultures. No one seems to have a need or desire to eat cute bunnies. Its like GNLD products - the seller really hypes it up and leaves you with the burden of moving stock.

So...whats the 411 people?

FYI new members the threads on rabbit farming:

I cannot believe no one has responded to either confirm or refute the above...have others burnt their fingers and not willing to talk about it? Or am I so way off course with this? The fact that its been featured on TV and in the papers does not shake my conviction....so were pyramid schemes and other scams....

I'd not like to single out discussants of this topic but would implore them to give some feedback - even if its to say they ditched the idea and opted instead to start guinea pig farming...

Anyone?

OK. No one wants to talk. Its like being in one of those wild west towns with a population of 50 people who all witnessed a murder but no one wants to talk...

I'll just have to don my investigative journalist suit (which I last wore many years ago) and dig deeper into this. The indications so far are that people are:

1)Talking about it too much and getting sucked in - incl the govet of Kenya Min of Agri and Livestock
2) Breeding to sell... for breeding to sell...for breeding to sell.... But so far, aside from an area in Gilgil, no one else is buying rabbit for meat rather for breeding to sell, for breeding to sell (thus the Pyrabbit Scheme) - yet everyone is extolling the virtues of rabbit meat.
3) I'd like to wager the breeders are partial to other meats and do not preach wine and drink it.
4) It may be the rage in western countries (the premise on which so much information abounds) but so is dog meat in Eastern countries...and pork in the non-Islamic parts of the world.

Will be back...have a great weekend...if you do find a choma joint doing sungura samosa's or rabbit sausages or bunnie mshikaki, pls do update me - more so if it goes down well with Tusker....

@djinn if you want to know if there is market for rabbit meat... Very simple, go to the carnivore, ask for rabbit. If they have, there is your answer. If they dont, then there is no market for rabbit meat... Coz Carnivore is the greatest meat ranch in africa!

@sparkly - I hardly think Carnivore would be the best indicator...at least not for the mass market where it is not a luxury meat so to speak....otherwise there would be only 3-4 producers (like there are Ostrich farms). If the Min of Agri, SACCOS, NGOs are all touting this as a way to create food...it must be for the common man....being amidst him, I still have not come across anyone eating rabbit...the most I have seen is a rabbit foot hung over someone's door entrance (for good luck I hear).

Its telling that no one has come forward to defend rabbit farming...or to report whether they had a rabbit pie over the weekend.

@djinn i've also always wanted to know where one can get rabbit meat within the city. I'm sure there would be a big market out there if somebody took the time to market this product well, especially in the frozen foods departments in the supermarkets

@chris79...do you eat rabbit meat? Do you know anyone who does? Honest?

I'm sure the market can be "created" - I do not believe it exists to the extent that some people say. I've polled friends - on IM, by email, face to face, etc and not a single ONE has eaten or wants to eat rabbit.
